A person however learned and qualified in his life's work in whom gratitude is absent,
is devoid of that beauty of character which makes personality fragrant.” ~Hazrat Inayat Khan~

Going “Raw” has opened my eyes to many things; not only to the health benefits for myself, and the environmental benefits for the planet; but also to an awareness that the choices I make, can and will affect my relationship to the natural world and provide a spiritual connection to all living things.

I try to set aside 2-3 minutes every day to give thanks for all I’m grateful for. I close my eyes and silently give thanks. This one act has made a huge difference in my life.

When someone does something nice for me, however small, I try to remember to say thank you. And really mean it. I even try to give thanks for “negative” things in my life. It is a great way to remind myself that there is good in just about everything. Problems can be seen as opportunities to grow, to be creative.

Expressing gratitude reminds me of all the positive things in my life. It can turn bad things into good things. It reminds me of what’s important. And it reminds me to thank others. The simple act of saying “thank you” to someone can make a difference in his or her life. We all like being appreciated for who we are and what we do. It costs me very little, but I know that if it makes someone else happy that makes me happy.

A thought from Rawsome Coaching:

We would like you to release the word "achieve" or "earn" from your vocabulary and from your understanding, altogether, and we would like you to replace those words with the word "allow". You're wanting to allow your Well-being, not achieve it. It's not something that you need to earn. All you have to do is decide what it is you would like to experience, and then allow it in order to achieve it. It isn't something you have to struggle for or try for. You are all worthy beings. You are deserving of this Well-being”. -Abraham-

The human body is amazing. It is so darn adaptable it will compensate in order to allow it to continue functioning. Sometimes the ways in which it compensates is not necessarily optimum but is allows us to keep making our way through the world. A case in point is my recent ‘struggle’ with carpal tunnel syndrome and tendonitis. I’ve put struggle in italics because it was suggested to me, that quite often when we are suffering with injuries or pains in our hands there is something we are resisting.

That gave me pause, as I felt I had made huge changes in my life towards a more balanced and healthful existence. Jim often reminds me that if I’m not enjoying what I’m doing, then don’t do it. Other words that have recently been tossed my way include detangle and surrender.

All of this leads me to consider what I truly am allowing into my life. But more importantly how I am ‘allowing’. It isn’t necessarily that I’m doing things I don’t want to do but rather, I am approaching what I have to do with a restraint that ultimately is constricting me physically and I hasten to add, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.

I finally figured out the only reason to be alive is to enjoy it. - Rita Mae Brown

Self-Coaching Activity:

  1. What do you believe yourself to be in your body, your heart, your mind, and your spirit?
  2. What do you pretend to be in your body, your heart, your mind, and your spirit?
  3. What will it take for you to allow all you can be in your body, your heart, your mind, and your spirit?

An Inspirational Story:
A frequent participant in our classes and at the ‘Not a Café’, Michelle had the following to share:

“I was so inspired by you & Chris at the class last Sunday that I decided to clean up my act. Having this acute flare-up of my back & arthritis for the past 6 weeks has taken its toll and I was ready to get serious and get back on track with my raw diet.

I had gotten pretty lazy since Christmas and I had made improvements by having fresh vegetable juice & green smoothies during the day but eating a regular cooked meal for dinner. Mostly just vegetables, some tofu & the occasional piece of fish. I was doing the "raw before 6" routine but my back was not really getting better. I had pain with every step I took.

Well Monday morning I committed to 7 days 100% raw and I can honestly say by the third day my back pain was down by about 50% and today on day 5 it is about 70% better. I am blown away how well this works for me. I am walking without any pain and my energy is through the roof!!!

7 days raw? Well the way I feel right now I never want to eat cooked food again. The difference is night and day. I went from being tired to thriving on 6 hours of sleep & all of this in less than a week.

You & Chris are a huge blessing to me and an amazing asset to our community. Thank you so much for what you do. You inspire so many and are healing people with your classes and coaching.

You rock! Michelle

PS do you have any prepared raw foods for sale? “

Thank you for that Michelle. Way to go for paying attention to your body and trying out the new recipes you learned in the Survival course. And in answer to your question, starting July 8, the Rawsome Kitchen is open for drop-ins. Not only will there be light lunch dishes available to eat on site as well as Salt Spring Island Wheatgrass and green smoothies, but an assortment of pre-made items to walk away with. See the ad in this newsletter for more info.

Be Thankful

Be thankful that you don’t already have everything you desire,
If you did, what would there be to look forward to?

Be thankful when you don’t know something
For it gives you the opportunity to learn.

Be thankful for the difficult times.
During those times you grow.

Be thankful for your limitations
Because they give you opportunities for improvement.

Be thankful for each new challenge
Because it will build your strength and character.

Be thankful for your mistakes
They will teach you valuable lessons.

Be thankful when you’re tired and weary
Because it means you’ve made a difference.

It is easy to be thankful for the good things.
A life of rich fulfillment comes to those who are also thankful for the setbacks.

GRATITUDE can turn a negative into a positive.
Find a way to be thankful for your troubles and they can become your blessings.

Transition Tips:

De-toxing Your Kitchen

Making a change, such as a shift from the Standard American Diet (SAD) to a raw living foods lifestyle requires changes in your kitchen. We’re talking about cleaning out your cupboards, fridge and freezer, and clearing your counter tops. What follows are some step-by-step instructions.

  1. Remove everything from your kitchen. Pull out all the food from the cupboards, fridge and freezer. Determine of all those foods what you are going to keep, donate, trash, recycle or compost.
  2. Clean the spaces that you have pulled your food from. It is a great way to start fresh. You are creating a blank canvas to create a new vision.
  3. If you live with others, then mark your territory and let people know that the foods in certain cupboards or shelves are yours. If the people you live with begin to eat more like you, then open your cupboards and open up possibilities to others. But for now, it is important to mark the foods that are yours and the foods that are for others. This will assist you in holding to your resolve to eat more raw living foods.
  4. Consider how you spend your time in the kitchen and what you will need for counter space. Consider what others in your home do in the kitchen and require for storage and food prep. This will help you create a more effective and supportive layout of your kitchen and plans for future changes: Will you require a second fridge or freezer? Where can bulk foods be stored other than in the kitchen? If the oven is never used, what can be stored in it?
  5. Having the equipment that you need to prepare raw living foods visible and on your counters will encourage you to use that equipment. Hiding your juicer makes it cumbersome to take it out everyday, let alone even thinking about juicing daily. Just as a traditional kitchen has a place for the stove/oven, a raw living foods kitchen requires a place of honour for our tools – blender, food processor, dehydrator, and juicer. They take up valuable real estate on counter tops; so consider if it is feasible to place a portable flat counter on top of your stovetop. For example, we have a sprouting rack on a portable counter top sitting on top of our stovetop. A dehydrator sits where the microwave used to be. Think about food storage and its proximity to your prep area.
  6. Finally, put everything back in their new places and check that what you are keeping and how you laid out your kitchen will support your vision of a raw living foods lifestyle. Any changes we make to workflow patterns sometimes needs to be played out for a while. Be flexible and make more changes as you need to. Keep in mind that whatever decisions you make, they need to support your new vision and desire to eat more raw living foods. Now go ahead and treat yourself to a yummy raw treat. Good luck.
